Vulgar Newbies started with high-school friends playing the original Half-Life Deathmatch, swearing at the screen, and hanging out long after the match should have ended.
The “Newbies” part was the point. Other clans wanted experts. We wanted people who were fun to have around—whether they could top the scoreboard or barely find the scoreboard.
The “Vulgar” part? We were kids, college students, young parents, and now somehow adults in our forties and fifties. The language stuck. More importantly, so did the friendships.
The point was never to win every round. The point was that everybody got another round.
